What a perfect beginning to the summer! Gas prices are still low. The weather has been marvelous in most parts of the country. And I’m seeing lots of new trailers and 5th wheels on the road. Have you gotten started yet? Let’s get those trailers rolling! If you need a hitch or accessories, give us a call.

Or visit our brand new website here!

Want to sell your Hensley Arrow back to us? We recondition pre-loved Hensley Arrows to like-new factory specifications and re-sell them at a substantially reduced price.

Also, if you decide to buy a 5th wheel within a year of your Hensley Arrow or Cub purchase, we will offer you the full purchase price of your hitch to trade-in for a TrailerSaver TS3 or TS2LBH. After one year, we will offer the fair trade-in value of your hitch.

Give us a call at 1-800-410-6580 to ask about our buy-back or trade-in program.

National & State Forest Campgrounds…those hidden gems

**ADVANCE FOR SUNDAY, AUG. 30** This Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 picture shows a sign pointing the way to Mud Lake State Forest Campground in Clare County's Freeman Township, Mich. After closing 12 of the 145 state forest campgrounds earlier this year in an effort to save money, officials at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are considering the possible closure of more campgrounds. I don’t know if anyone keeps statistics on the subject, but if I had to guess, I’d say that 95% of trailer owners stick to state and national park campgrounds or private campgrounds with electric hook-ups at a bare minimum. And don’t get me wrong, I love our state parks and a lot of private campgrounds. But we’re missing out on the best parts of the RV life.
If you want to park your trailer next to a river or lake, or see nothing but forest in any direction, it’s tough to find, even in a state park. And in the summer, such locations are jam-packed. Peace and quiet are rare commodities at this time of year.
Unless you stray a bit from the beaten path.
National and State Forest campgrounds exist in nearly every state. They range in size from a half-dozen sites to a hundred or more. As far as I know, none of them have hook-ups of any kind. Most don’t even have dump stations. But what they do have are some fantastic spots that you normally only see in RV advertisements.
They also don’t advertise. So you’ll have to do a little research. Campground directories will list most of them, but the descriptions leave much to be desired. Even worse, they give no indication of what size unit the sites can handle. Many of these out of the way campgrounds are for tents or pop-ups only. There are some that are only accessible on foot or even by canoe. So advanced scouting is the name of the game here.
Whenever we camp in a known location like a favorite state park, we take a couple hours to check out the nearby campgrounds. If there’s a national or state forest campground, we give it a drive through. Most of the time, the sites are too small for our 29′ Flagstaff, but occasionally we strike gold. Check your state’s department of natural resources for a listing of campgrounds. Again, the descriptions are lacking, but they should at least have a map.
Speaking of…you can create your own directory with the use of your cell phone and an app like Evernote. When we visit any campground, I’ve gotten into the habit of snapping photos of the best sites and filing them away in Evernote. That way, I know exactly where I’m going when I turn into the campground. If there’s a map posted, I take a photo of that as well.

If you want this only a few steps from your trailer, a national or state forest campground is your best bet.
Facebook is a another good source. In Michigan, we have several Facebook groups devoted to camping, even one for State Park lovers. You can usually find a few people who’ve visited the national and state forest campgrounds. Even if they’re not RVers, they can tell you if the sites are big enough (be careful here, a non-tower doesn’t always understand what can be a hinderance to parking a long trailer). Always ask if they’ve actually seen other trailers in the campground.
Remember, you won’t have electricity. This is where an extra battery and a generator come in handy. If it’s warm, you won’t use much electricity. Just be careful with the lights (and no radio). A small 1000W generator will recharge your batteries quickly. But be courteous and only run it when necessary. And please, never during nighttime hours.
Water is easier. Just manage it well. Most of us have camped without water hook-ups. Same deal. I carry a 6-gallon jug in case we run out and need to replenish from a water faucet or pump. One jug can get us through that last day.
Dumping is another issue. Like I said, many of these campgrounds don’t have dump stations. Your best bet is to hold it until your next trip to a more modern campground, where you can dump on the way in. No, it doesn’t hurt a thing to leave those tanks full. If you have odor problems, that’s a topic for another column (Odor-Con, people, it’s a life-saver).
Sure, it’s a bit more trouble, and you’ll have to give up some modern conveniences, but for a true outdoor experience and some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll find outside your RV, national and state forest campgrounds are the places to unhook.
As always, we’ll be seeing you under the awning.
