Are low gas prices going away?

None of us want to see a sign like this again. Gas prices have been the hot topic among RVers over the last decade. Some have even given up on RVing because of the high cost of travel. As I’ve said before here, that is unnecessary. Fluctuating gas prices have less impact on the overall cost of your travels than you realize, once you sit down and do the math. And there are plenty of ways to reduce that impact. Fewer trips and longer stays, keeping your trips closer to home, cutting expenses elsewhere, etc. You’ve heard it all before.

But should we expect gas prices to skyrocket again? That’s the question everyone is asking from the campground to Wall Street. And the answer may surprise you.

Hensley operates out of southeast Michigan, so we’re all finely tuned into the auto industry. What we’re hearing (and you can do your own research at sites like Bloomberg and Auto News), is that the major auto companies are putting massive amounts of money and development into their electric vehicle programs. Much more than the oil industry has been predicting. Estimates vary, but on average, most companies predict that up to 10% of Americans will be driving electric cars by 2025.

So what, you say?

Well, a 10% reduction in combustion engine vehicle equates to millions of barrels of oil that are no longer needed. When Saudi Arabi upped their output by a much smaller margin (in an attempt to crush American oil producers), we saw gas drop to as low as $1.10 per gallon is some areas. It may have proved a costly mistake on the Saudi’s part. With Iran back in the mix, and the demand for oil dropping for the first time ever, they may just find it impossible to get oil back to the $100 per barrel range. Estimates for this year don’t even have them hitting $40.

I know, we’re a friendly, towing and camping newsletter. But this news impacts us all. While we cannot expect an electric motor that will tow a travel trailer anytime soon, we can expect to see our second cars, and our neighbor’s cars, going electric or hybrid. And that means less demand for gasoline, which means lower prices are here to stay. Our grandchildren may actually see gasoline disappear altogether! Let’s just get those electric motors pulling big rigs before then. It’s still a bit sci-fi, but no one sees the trend toward electric motors reversing.

Of course, there’s always a disclaimer. Anything can happen in the Middle East that will drive oil prices back up. But we also know now that the U.S. and Canada have the oil reserves and technology to replace whatever we lose in imports. It’s a

different world than it was ten years ago. And a different game.

So my advice? Buy your trailer, it’s still the most economical way to travel. Check out the small diesel engines that are now available in Jeeps, Dodge, GM, and Ford trucks. We’re using a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3-liter diesel to tow with now, and the mileage is amazing–35 mpg when we’re not towing, 15 mpg when we are. And if you need a second car for daily traveling to work, check out the electric and hybrid vehicles. Prices have come down and ranges have improved. Here’s our new commuter car!

Maintenance Reminder

Don’t forget to check the torque on your u-bolts at least once a year or every 5,000 miles. They should be torqued to 45 ft.-lbs. If your Hensley is new, check the u-bolts after the first 200 miles.
