Vacations
at ... Wal-Mart?
Let's roast some
marshmallows
By David

Mention Wal-Mart to an RVer and,
very often, these generally speaking happy-go-lucky
folk become deadly serious. "Wal-Mart is
wonderful for RVers," some say; "Shouldn't
be allowed," say others.
The following was an item from the
hugely popular "Wal-Mart
Overnighting" information section on
Roaming Times, written by "Campman" (who
are you Campman? - your fame is spreading ...):
| "I see absolutely
nothing wrong with camping at Wal-Mart. In
the next few years I will be taking a long
vacation with the family and my RV. I intend
to stay at each Walmart for a week or two
and visit the area. I have got a portable
tank to dump my sewage at a local gas
station bathroom and I get water a rest
areas to fill the freshwater tank. I can
save $40. bucks a day. Doing this I think I
can soon retire and travel for next to
nothing. I also have a moped for local site
seeing, saves a bunch on gas. So what if all
those greedy campground owners go broke,
they deserve it for not giving us what we
want, (free camping with all the conveniences).
Hope to see you all soon, we can roast some
marshmallows around the fire, what the heck
let Walmart clean up the mess." |
Oh, "double, double, toil and trouble,"
as the witch said in Macbeth. RVers of all
shapes and sizes did not like this. "Eye
of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of
dog." RVers REALLY did not like
this. Apart from comments like: "It's
people like you who ruin the few free benefits we
RVers get" and "you ought to be ashamed of
yourself", Roaming Times received emails asking
it to remove the offending item, lest Wal-Mart see
it and take away RVers privileges.
We think it was a hoax. We think Campman is
a peaceful guy with a wife and 2.2 children happily
staying at RV parks. We think he has a glint
in his eye and a mischievous sense of humor.
But we may be wrong. Please look out for
Campman at your local Walmart. If you see a
campfire and marshmallows roasting, please let us
know.
