Saint Louis Gateway Arch
St. Louis MO

The Saint Louis Gateway Arch is roughly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and about half the height of the Empire State Building.  It's 630 feet tall and 630 feet from leg to leg at ground level.

It was completed in 1965 at a cost of around $13 million.

It's a stainless steel marvel - about 43,000 tons of it. This is the view we got looking up at it from the ground next to one of the legs.

You can get a tram to the top; it takes just 4 minutes for the tram to get to the top and 3 minutes to come back down.  The viewing area at the top holds about 160 people.  On a clear day it's estimated you can see for up to 30 miles.

The arch moves, it can sway as much as 18 inches at the top.  It is designed to withstand an earthquake.

The arch dominates the St Louis skyline as you can see from the photo to the right which we took from downtown St Louis, from in front of the Old Court House.  (The Old Court House is another St Louis attraction with a wonderful gallery of paintings showing the history of St Louis - well worth visiting.)

The Museum of Westward Expansion is located underground between the legs of the Gateway Arch.

Saint Louis Museum of Westward Expansion

It's a fascinating place to visit and it tells the story of the growth of the United States from east to west by means of what I suppose was the first RV - the covered wagon.  Admission is free and apart from all the exhibits and a movie about westward expansion, there is also a movie about the construction of the arch.
