Grand Ole Opry
Nashville TN

The Grand Ole Opry used to be at the Ryman Auditaurium until 1974 when it moved to the new 4000+ seat Grand Ole Opry House to the east of downtown Nashville.

A six foot circle of the original oak stage was transplanted to the new stage.  The present stars of the Opry stand on the same boards that were used by legends such as Hank Williams and Patsy Cline.  Even Elvis Presley stood on the original spot;  in later years Garth Brooks said one of his greatest thrills was performing on the spot Elvis had used on his one and only Opry performance.

The Opry is a huge barn of a place, but it's very comfortable with cushioned pews.   This is live radio – complete with commercials – very strange.  It is a stage show and a radio show at the same time.

The show we saw was wonderful.  The music – country, bluegrass and western.

It has a huge stage – many people standing in the back of the stage – performers in front – huge screens overhead and on the sides showing the performers up close (no problem seeing from where we sat and the screens helped us to see the people up close.

One group we saw – the Ballamy Brothers - was a favorite with the crowd that night.  When they started singing their signature song – “If I said you had a beautiful body – would you hold it against me”  the audience all joined in.  We both really enjoyed the evening.

A great experience - if you're going to Nashville, don't miss it.

Adding to the story ... Readers comments:

Brad :  I've been to the Opry several times and always loved it. The last time we went there weren't any really big name acts but we still really enjoyed it. We got really good seats because there were no big names on the bill, but you can see OK from anywhere. Two and a half hours of fun and laughter as well as the music.

chris Ross :  hey the Grand ole opry live show the most watched saturday night on tv GAC !

Jean :  Is the Opry still on TV? We have always watched it Saturday nights on CMT but it doesn't seem to be on now.
