Elvis has left the building ...
Taking the tour at Graceland

Elvis Presley is reported to have bought Graceland in 1957 for $102,000.  He was lucky to get it; a deal had already been done to sell it to the YMCA for $35,000.  Elvis upped the price, got a $37,000 mortgage, and the house passed from one musician to another.

The owner had been Ruth Marie Moore, who later went on to become a celebrated harpist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.  It's owned now by another Marie, of course - Lisa Marie Presley.

Elvis lived at Graceland from 1957 until he died in August 1977.  Two days after his death, Elvis left the building and was buried at Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery.  Following an attempt to steal his body from the cemetery, his body was moved back to Graceland and buried in the grounds.

My wife and I took the Graceland tour last year; it's a fascinating tour and we enjoyed it very much.

The trophy room is spectacular, as you can see from the photograph we took on the right.  Yes - they let you take photographs.  What they don't let you do, is visit upstairs.  Forbidden fruit is the sweetest and everyone who visits Graceland asks the question: "Why can't we visit the second floor?"  This was Elvis private sanctuary and it has been closed since his death.  Perhaps the only non-family member to see it was Nicholas Cage the actor, and he had to marry Lisa Marie to get upstairs.

When Elvis moved in to Graceland in 1957, his mother, father, and grandmother moved in with him.  Grandma outlived them all; she died at Graceland in 1980 at the age of 86.

jacob :  I went there with my family last year during spring break. It was well worth the drive, as we live in washington. If any of you are planning on going, it is a very nice experience

madison :  He,s the king of rock n roll.I wish I lived in GraceLand with Elvis

martina morales :  i have always loved elvis since i was a little girl hope to see grace land real soon i'm sure it will be exiting long live the king

MADDIE :  It has always been a dream of mine to see Graceland ...for Christmas my son made my dream come true ..he gave me a weekend at Graceland...I stayed at the Heartbreak hotel with my grandaughter (13)..We had the greatest time ...She keeps asking when we are going back....to be able to walk into his home...words cannot express how I felt...Elvis will live on and on...no matter what your age is ...

Jay & Cally :  We're older folks from New Haven who've been wondering how all y'all younger folks knew about The King??? Also, we've been hoping to get on out (great pics!, btw) sometime soon in our RV, so maybe see you then???

Kirsty Lauren Simmons: :  I am an 18 year old Elvis Fanatic, you cant get a bigger fan than me... i guess everyone says this and im sure everyone feels the same way as i do about this legendary god that will always be impossible to forget. Anyway for this special birthday age, my mum and dad planned a surprise trip to Graceland, the place i could only ever dream about going to. its not untill 15 days time in which i go, i cannot wait im so excited and so thankfull that i have such wonderful parents to have been given a birthday present like this, nothing will compare to this.. justlike no other artist will compare to The King of Rock n Roll. Theres not a second that goes by that i dont imagine walking into his home, where he lived, where he died without getting a chill down my spine, i mean to think that i will be walking over the footsteps of which Elvis Presley walked... AMAZING!

Chaz :  Hey this is Deanna im not really a big fan as other people but your house Graceland is nice and big but how much was it? By Deanna P.S im not a big fan its just that big and gourgueaus inside. xxx

Elyssa :  I hope I can go to his house

Teresa :  If you LOVE Elvis, you'll like this. If you wanted to see a fancy spacious home, this isn't it. Tiny rooms, herded around like sheep. They made everything into Elvis, from the garage to the walkway to the carport to the bathroom. Overwhelmed by it all. Room after room of videos of Elvis singing and in movies. Best room was the car museum. The house is across the street, which you take by bus. Good luck understanding the accents of the workers there. No signs where to go to on the biz side - store after store after store of elvis crap for sale. They give you tickets, and you have to ask 3 attendants before you find where to go to. I wouldn't go back again, nor would recommend it. And I love to dance and rock and roll! But if there wasn't a line, I could have seen the $35 cheap tour in ten minutes.

jackie :  I have been to graceland twice, the best time of my life. I love to lisen to Elvis and watch his DVDs.He was the greatest and no one can even come close to greatness. You can feel Elvis present in every room. Can't wait to go back again.

jeremy :  I have never seen GraceLand but I plan to real soon I hope its amazing!!!

Kyra :  I visited in march 2008. It was the most amazing thing i have seen in my entire life. Everything was amazing to the home videos they had playing of him and his family to his grave in the garden. There was a very somber mood that made it even better. I loved every second of it. And it is really cool that you can control your own tour guide headset. Also the bus ride up to his house is fun. It makes it really exciting!

dj :  love him went to graceland in 2004 it was the best holiday we ever had. never forget loved it

Gillian Kennedy :  We visited Graceland in Oct 2006 - all of my family thoroughly enjoyed it - from my 14yr old daughter to my 18 yr old son to my 70 yr old dad to my 67 yr old mam & to my husband & i 40 somthings. We stood in awe at Graceland as to what Elvis achieved in his short but extrodinary life. What a man - what music - never to be forgotten!

Marsgil :  I visited Graceland with three of my sons in 1999 and it was a dream come true, it was smaller than I had imagined but was packed full of everything Elvis.

lisa marie presley :  im going to graceland for the first time next march i was bought up with elvis by my family my dad change the family names is there any places u can recomend me visiting whilst in memphis

Nora :  Elvis my biggest idol of all times. Would like to visit graceland someday.

Rockin' Robin :  I always dig going to Memphis and Graceland for my fix of Elvisness during January and August. I statred going there in 1978 long before his beloved home was opened to the public. When we did tour Graceland in the mid 80's and Aunt Delta was still living there you could smell bacon & eggs being cooked in the kitchen if you took a morning tour. Those were the days and I have a secret place at Graceland where I always leave Elvis a "gift". TCB Baby see you again next trip to Tennessee

lexie :  i am thirteen and will be going to graceland this year from febuaray 29 to march 3 for my graduation sooooo if you have anything to prepare me for tell me

Jill :  I miss him i love his music! A long time ago i went through where he lives and got to sign his wall in front of his house, but people probly wrote on it.... i wish he was still alive he inspired so many people.

Angela :  I visited graceland as a birthday gift from my mom & her husband, i've dreamed of going all my life, finally at the age of 34 i got in. It's a memory i will never forget, and i want to go back so so bad. Elvis is the KING, and there will never be another like him. I LOVE ELVIS ALWAYS!!!!!!

michael sr. :  Back in 1988 wife & i drove to graceland from winston-salem ,nc she was pregnant with our 1st of 6 kids we thought she was goin to have mikey on the way she had labor pains the whole way but when we finaly got to graceland i remember it was like a dream had come true ,it took my breath away iwas actualy standing in the home of my idol a peice of history i couldnt believe how beautiful it was there & a feeling of piece that was coming over me it was like i could feel his presance, weird huh but anyways it was well worth the 13 hr trip that we made & the fact that i lost my job to go elvis was the greatest & always will be . he will be missed . i plan to make another trip soon possibly this summer for my sons 20th b-day i would love to be there at x-mas time it looks so beutiful this time of yr . merry christmas evryone & lets not forget the true meaning, god bless

Ralph & Tina Jaramillo :  My wife Tina and I visited Graceland last May. It was awesome, everything we expected and more. It was a vacation of a lifetime. We loved it, and enjoyed it so much that we want to go back again and visit soon. Graceland is so much more beautiful when you actually visit it in person! Our trip was an anniversary gift from our son Matthew and his wife Ernestina.

Dutchie :  I hope all you young people can someday get to see Graceland! Its absolutely the most wonderful feeling you get when you walk on those grounds, or go in the house. You will have chills like never before! Stay Loving the best singer EVER! ELVIS!

Lizzy :  Nobody is like Elvis. He is the best performer who has ever lived. He is absolutely the best and he will be the best forever. I would be happy to see Graceland one time.

Adrian Everett :  Graceland is more popular than the Whitehouse in DC and should stay that way.Where the Whitehouse shut down tours on Sept. 11 Graceland kept on rockin' and rollin' with the old showman saying of "The Show must go on !"

Elvis lover :  Elvis was the greatest and one day in my life time I would love to visit Graceland, I hope Lisa Marie never sells it and it remains the icon it is to so many people

jason :  ELVIS! ELVIS! ELVIS! I first listerned to elvis when i was about 7 i am now 16 and he has always been a great and powerful influence to me in life and in my own music career and one day i really hope i can have the chance to visit graceland when i have the money too. THANKYOU ELVIS!

Liz :  this is a great biograpy of graceland. I am a 12 year old fan. I know, I am too young! Keep up the excellent work!!

johnny :  i am a number 1 fan ov elvis i think he is great iv got every thing thats out he is the king of rock and roll

Rick Jordan :  I stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel and liked it. It was very Elvis themed, for example the TV had continuous Elvis videos.

Tony :  A good place to stay if you're visiting Graceland is Heartbreak Hotel. It's not really expensive - about $100 per night. There are Elvis-accented rooms and 4 Elvis-themed suites.
