Annapolis, Maryland
"America's sailing capital ..."

By David Mottram

Annapolis really is like the brochure says: it is "a museum without walls, a quaint seaport village steeped in hundreds of years of maritime heritage."

Annapolis is the Maryland colonial capital and has a history of being the "Athens of America".  It was certainly popular with George Washington - his house at Mount Vernon is not far away.  Thomas Jefferson was also said to have often visited Annapolis as did many other famous figures who liked the pubs and wonderful architecture of this timeless colonial town.

It's also the home of the US Naval Academy and every day at noon the cadets line up in a ritual that is said to be Annapolis' answer to the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

Downtown offers restaurants, shopping and many attractions and it's wonderful just to wander through the streets on a warm sunny day.

But while walking is an attraction of Annapolis, boating must be the focal point.  You can rent boats or just go on a boating tour of the area as my wife and I did.

Anapolis MD - boating is a main attraction

There seems to be every sort of food available at the many restaurants and pubs, but seafood is of course a big attraction - with crab cakes a favorite, just as they are at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, another attraction not far away.  We loved Annapolis, and think you will too.

Adding to the story ... Readers comments:

Eileen :  We went to Annapolis after visiting the George Washington mansion. It's about a 50 min. drive. Really pretty countryside – and of course, green. We stopped at a restaurant for crab cakes. After dinner we drove to the Annapolis harbor – very beautiful and upscale. We took a water taxi/guided tour that took us all around the bay – the talk included the history of the houses along the coast as well as info about the Annapolis Naval Academy. It has the largest, four story coed dorm in the world. Could you imagine the possibilities for social interchange? We came back at twilight and took some pictures. This was a wonderful day and we talked about perhaps going back to Annapolis again – a really beautiful city.
