A call for action - RV waste handling systems
- changing the standard
"The RV waste handling system is too primitive and too unsanitary"

A CALL FOR ACTION IN THE RV INDUSTRY
Call for action form

We have had a forum for RV waste handling systems running on Roaming Times for the last year.  The conclusion from this is that people feel that there is a need for a better method of emptying tanks. Typically, people say:  "I believe that emptying tanks is the most unhealthy part of RVing."

We believe there is a need to change the current minimum standard by which RVs are built, under NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency).

The solution is simple and cost effective for everyone:

  1. The sewer hose needs to be connected to the RV at all times.
  2. The sewer hose and fittings need to be tested and listed. Currently there are no standards set on hoses/fittings which is resulting in leaks and outright failures.
  3. The sewer inlet fitting needs to have a method to shut off the flow in the event a problem occurs.

How you can help: Please fill out this form and express your views on dumping holding tanks and the reason you feel a more sanitary method is desirable. (Your comments/views can be entered in the box located under the title "Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Comment".)

Once you hit the submit button on the form, your comments will be sent directly to NFPA as well as in a requested changes report being prepared.

Dumper Doug :   After reading all the comments I would like to ad that the process of dumpng the tanks is indeed simple, Black first Grey second. The issue is that the products offered you as the consumer are designed and built to cost! Three major companies compete for your business(because RV mfgs. are not responsible for the transfer of the waste) and they tried to persuade you to buy their package based mostly on lower price. No fittings you buy at RV stores are tested or listed to any standard AND they are not used in any other industry! That speeks volumns to the quality of the products you are forced to use. The solution is simple and we have worked hard to make dumping human waste uneventful and sanitary while doiing it in an environmentally friendly way. remember; you get what you pay for! Keep an eye out for the solution here at Roaming Times because this is where the solution will be introduced!

AmericanTravler :   I don't see a big problem in dumping holding tanks. I've got a '92 Allegro Bay 32' class A. The dump hose stays connected all the time to a "Y" that both gray and black tanks empty into. Each tank has it's own valve, (knob turn type) they work just fine. 20' of dump hose feeds down to a small doored compartment. And it has a black tank flush system. Use disposable gloves ($5.00 a box of 100)and dump the black first and then the gray, simple and doesn't cost a lot. Just part of RVing. This new Waste Master 1 system cost more than $400. plus installation. Happy travels and safe dumping!!!!

Speed E Drain :   The answer: Speed E Drain RV Sewer System!!!!!

Ross P :   A Watkins - there are situations where independent service companies do this function - for example at some rallies or trade shows. But generally parks have facilities and "honey wagons" are not needed or wanted. The main thing is that RVers should be independent of service companies doing this and therefore RVs have their own systems. The problem is the systems are a bit too simple and people generally don't like connecting and disconnecting hoses. And errors occur causing unpleasant problems.

A Watkins :   Would it be feasible for an independant service company to come in and offer waste removal for campers? Would that be a welcome service?

Brunhilde :   I'm brand new to this, and haven't yet learned to "dump". I'm going to a campground this weekend and will try to throw myself on someone's mercy to learn. I've read how it's done, but, honestly.....I don't quite understand until I get to see the process. I'm not thrilled at the idea.

fleetwood owner :   Big improvement because the system has many problems. It needs to be connected and disconnected and can be messy doing this. It needs to be flushed most newer rvs have cleaning systems for the black tank but they need to be set up every time you use it. RVs need a better system its crazy that we've not improved this.

serge :   The system as it is not too bad if you follow simple igenique procedure the only apperatuce needed would be a direct water spred into the waste & grey tank so we would be able to clean it properly.

coachman99 :   NO new ideas than already stated, but wash hands, build in pressure wash the tanks. My acess to tanks is under the slide out room, how clean do I stay trying to handle that. Keystone brand.

Jerry Christenson :   One of the biggest areas for improvement is the dump facilities. We came across a campground that was almost a breeze to use. They had a flexible hose permanently affixed to their dump station. All that was required was to pull up attach their hose and open the valve. Upon completion close the valve disconnect the hose and put it in the hanger. I was amazed at how much easier this made the whole process.

Travel N Ed :   The current designed system is quite simple and reliable when quality hoses and fittings are selected. It seems to me if the system is improved it will also greatly increase cost. What is needed is common sense when servicing the system, use disposable rubber gloves and have some concern for others.

Al H. :   Several areas should be improved as they relate to sanitation of rv holding tanks. There should be no possibility of any cross contamination, hands should never come in contact with gray or black sewage. Fool proof automatic anti siphon valves should be incorporated into the fresh and sewer systems. Dumping hoses should be permanently attached but easily replaceable, high strength and sufficent length so no extensions are needed. Automatic high pressure water blasting systems should be built into the holding tanks for full cleaning while draining. Campground and dump station sewer hose hookups should always be below grade. Remember, the campers that don't practice safe, sanitary dumping leave a germ and virus infected campsite for the next camper, so always were good quality disposable gloves every time you set up and tear down your site.

Rancho Cucamonga Camper :   How many instances of illness or spread of disease are anually atributable to "unsafe" RV dumping of grey/black water tanks? Does anyone keep records to quantify the seriousness of this problem? Or are we just sharing undocumented opinions?

Fun-Timer :   It's appalling to see RVers dumping their black/gray water tanks with bare hands and then opening the door and starting their vehicle--without washing or sanitizing their hands! They have then transfered the bateria from the sewer to their body & RV. We need a safer way to dump RV tanks without the possible e coli and other contamination of the driver and rig!

Breezy :   There has to be a simpler, easier way to dump sewer tanks. The present way is definitely unsanitary.

raymond :   This is the number one problem!!!!!!There has got to be a better and safer way for the disposal of black and gray water, etc..In this MODERN world I cannot believe this problem can't be corrected!!!!!!The sensors in all 3 of our new motorhomes never worked correctly.

Amir Garrison :   I think that a water tight automatic system should be built in with a coiled discharge hose to empty into a sewer clean out or a handy toilet.

Orange County Ca :   Listen to your mother. Wash your hands.

Karen Hammond :   I think this is worthwhile and we should all support it. I believe the usual system is too simple and needs to be made more hygienic.

roaminhome :   Let's hope the rules don't become retroactive!

Charlotte :   If we can put a man on the moon, certainly we should be able to create a system that is foolproof and dependable while protecting the user.
