Arizona boondocking in the desert

Arizona boondocking in the deserted desert is the way to go. There is plenty of places to go and have a relaxing vacation right on BLM land that doesn't cost anything...or like $180 a season.

It is so cheap to live in AZ my fellow campers speak in soft voices so the hordes don't hear us..

I live full time with my wife in a Casita 17' fiberglass travel trailer with the high axel and big wheels and taller tires to get off the road and into the pretty canyons.

A word of warning, once you experience the freedom and cost effectiveness of boondocking, it just may turn you into a desert rat too and your friends and family will think you have been out in the sun too long.

So sell the house that is a yoke around your neck, get a self contained travel trailer and start living once again. There is no STRESS in the desert, just make sure you are camping above Hwy 8 and not close to the Mexican border.

2013 Lil' Guy Silver Shadow NacyJMy husband and I wanted a small camper that we could pull with our 2006 Toyota Solara Convertible, so we were naturally drawn to teardrops (we also love anything retro-styled). After on-line comparisons of different models, especially their weights and prices, we settled on the Lil' Guy. We were also happy to find a dealer only 3 hours away (so many seem to be on the east or west coasts while we live in the midwest). We went up to look at his inventory last fall (Nov. 2013) and chose the 5 X 8 Silver Shadow which did not include the installed sink or stove (we figured the simpler the better). Now that we've had our little camper out about a half dozen times, we're so glad we went this direction. It's ultra easy to set up and take down: just pull in and block the wheels. The interior holds a queen sized mattress so we don't feel cramped, plus, not only do the screened windows open to let in fresh air, there's a ceiling fan that is a welcome relief on those muggy nights. The interior also has some cupboards and a narrow shelf for storing books, glasses, etc. I get to set up the hatch as my little kitchen which includes a hot pot (for hot water and coffee), a double hot plate (for when we can't use a grill), and plenty of room for towels, food supplies and even a drawer for utensils. Best of all, in spite of wet weather, our bed stays dry. It sure beats sleeping on the ground in a tent!

Re: Northstar Escape Pod truck camperG Atsmaaaronet- You are TOTALLY wrong; not a single part is Toyota. Look under the hood- only GM engines here. Marshall- That was true with the Chevy LUV; actually it was a rebadged Isuzu. The Colorado was designed totally by GM in-house

Re: Forest River Rockwood ultra lite travel trailerHerbert JonesWe just purchases this unit. Everrhing in it worked properly on our maiden voyage of 500 miles. We went to crater lake Oregon. However we had one of the new tires blow out because of a defective sidewall. We were just informed by the dealer that it will be 2-4 weeks before they will receive the relacement tire. Oh for joy the summer is slipping away.
Re: FulltimingJimmyI am a 68yr. Old man who wants to go on a 1 or 2 month rv trip out west. I have a 1994 Winnebageo Warrior which I just purchased. I am looking for a 45/70 yr old woman to join me.Sex is not a requirement however if it happens then it will be a plus for both of us. I am a very liberal person and you must be too. I am in good shape and want to enjoy our travels by being able to hike, fish boat ect. As far as finances are concerned I am not looking for anything necessarily however it would certainly need to be discussed. We would depart from Savannah georgia and go wherever out West.If you have experience RVing it would also be a plus as I have never gone on a extended trip in one. I can be reached at jmcintire@hargray.com
Re: RVing with Your PetCoryWe travel with 2 senior Goldens and a young one... It is very important that our Fur Babies stay cool, I would have not thought to leave a key with the camp host or a note... We usually don't lock the door when we leave them... And a ramp is very important to have to help get them in and out so the steep stairs don't hurt their hips.

Re: RV quality concernsWaltStill trying to get jack repaired on my 2014 Winnebago Vista 32ke. Winnebago agreed to send new one to Camping World where motor home was bought. Its ironic that "Good Sam" did a survey that customers listed service as a dissatisfaction because one of "Good Sam" owns Camping World that I have found to be terrible when it comes to service.

Re: Getting Your Kicks at Age 66, the RV LifeCHUCK AND LIZWe were full time RV'er for 7 years while I was still working. My job included travel so the RV was perfect. Retired now (67) but have COPD and require oxygen. Bought a house as a home base. Have the house concentrator and bottle charger in washer/dryer compartment. Have a rented backup portable concentrator in living room. We still love our RVing and getting older may mean moving a little slower, but no reason to stop. Just make sure you got your meds and a way to get refills.5/25/2014 10:04:00 AM
Re: Getting Your Kicks at Age 66, the RV LifeJodiAfter reading this article-I am reminded of how wonderful the RVing life is. My husband and I were RVers for 7 years - We never regretted a minute that we spent travelling around and seeing the country. I agree with the writer that when you pull into an RV park - you can make instant friends if you want to. Most people are basically friendly and helpful.5/21/2014 6:30:00 PM
Re: RVing with Your PetKayI have 2 older dogs who are big (84 pounds each) and I'm new to RV'ing with them. Can someone tell me the best way to travel with older dogs? What to look for in a campsite and what ramps are best? They both have hip dysplasia. Thanks!2/17/2014 7:14:00 PM
