Dan Ball of D.P. Ball Advertising
 Article - November 15th, 2010:

RV dealers - and other retailers - across the nation have embraced the internet enthusiastically. As they should: It's an extremely viable, effective tool to get specific messages out to consumers. And it's no exaggeration to say the internet has revolutionized the way we conduct business. We have included all internet venues in our programs; Web site development, mini website development, search engine optimization, social media (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, blogging), pay per click campaign, banner ads, redirect marketing, back linking, inventory listing on popular RV sites, create, develop, and produce advertising messages to apply on website and related RV sites.

Too often, while celebrating their success on the internet, dealers discard traditional advertising media. Maybe they didn't get results with newspaper, direct mail, radio and TV ads - and we don't find that surprising.

Why? Because very few dealers, or even ad agencies, know how to effectively orchestrate a successful, traditional ad campaign for RV dealers. If they don't know the key formulas that have proved effective for decades, it's no surprise their campaigns didn't work.

Traditional advertising hasn't faded away nor lost its effectiveness - it's just that it wasn't that successful for RV dealers even before the internet came along. It's much easier to monitor and gauge customer traffic patterns and quantify the number of visits on the internet. But how many of those 'hits' turn into real sales?

At D.P. Ball & Associates, we constantly review and critique RV dealers' advertising messages. Too often we notice a lot of wasted dollars even in successful campaigns, money that didn't have to be spent to achieve the same results. The bottom line: maximize your advertising dollar no matter which medium you buy.

The ideal, most effective marketing plans incorporate both internet and traditional advertising programs, each complementing the other. We have successfully implemented our hybrid program for many dealers. Traditional campaigns need to capture the key selling components, the precise tone, that make results-driven ads so successful. This includes everything from attention-catching visuals and urgent headers to the right selling propositions to persuasive tactics. Even internet banner ads must incorporate the right strong, compelling elements to maximize those advertising dollars.

We've been helping RV dealers with their marketing for over 25 years now, and during that time we've identified the most successful formulas, the best aggressive response-driven advertising techniques that bring the kind of results you want: customers coming into your dealership.

Remember, it's not the traditional medium or vehicle that doesn't work, it's how well your message is conveyed and delivered.

Thanks to Dan Ball of D.P. Ball Advertising

Re: FulltimingSimonne Looking for male companion who has a motor home and is looking for a travel partner. I use to own a 35 ft Winnebago but sold it after my husband past away. I loved traveling with a motor home and miss it. I am 69, good looking, 5'7" tall 150 lbs. I am very active and healthy and take care of myself. I can help with expenses, cooking, and cleaning. I am very particular and neat and would like the same. I do not like slobs (sorry). My goal was to see the capital of all the states. On the way we would stop and see museum, flea markets, antiques shops. Go to the movies or theaters here and there. Staying in campgrouds for short times and enjoying playing cards and games with others there. I am open to try new things and adventurers. But motorcycle and snow mobile is not for me. Looking for a good gentlemen, caring, thoughtful man that is easy to get along with as I can be. I do not smoke, do drugs or drink. And I do not want someone who does (a social drink on occasion is OK) If interested send me an e-mail with your picture and info about yourself at(sim2travel@yahoo.com) And please no scam and be honest. At my age I don't have time for foolish stuff. I am retired and just want to enjoy what time we have left.

Re: Jayco Melbourne class C motorhomeMarkintheGardensWe have owned a 2010 Melbourne 29D for a little over a year. First, to jaybird, I think the 38'-8" is a typo. Our 29D is their largest model and I'm pretty sure it's about 31'-8". As far as handling, I think it handles very well. This is our first motorhome as owners, although we have rented a few times. It does react to cross winds and passing semis (don't they all?) We tow a Jeep Wrangler and even with our inexperience we have done well. As far as the actual coach, we bought this one from a local dealership that had it listed on consignment with 8,300 mi. We really liked the layout. Three slides makes it appear much more roomy. It's been perfect for the two of us and our two puppies. However, it seems that we have had more than our share of trouble (AC fan went out, Water heater died). Some of it has been covered by the maker of each component, others have been under our after-market extended warranty. Forget getting ANY help from JAYCO as a second owner. After several months, we noticed the floor in the galley felt "soft". It was discovered that the water system control valve connections were dripping. Apparently they had been dripping for a really long time and probably had not been properly tightened at the factory. JAYCO refused to do anything about the repair. With that kind of QC and zero support, I would not recommend them.

Re: RV vacations least expensiveIra DoubterWhy wasn't the cost of the RV, plus insurance, taxes and storage space for winter months, plus scheduled and unscheduled maintenance factored into the total expenses? A breakdonw on the highway could really eat into your cost of a vacation.Plus the food and supplies that you buy to put in the RV for those trips.
Re: Fun Finder X travel trailer Bill WrightMy daughter has a 2006 Fun Finder X, has been nothing but trouble since she bought it new. Besides electric and plumbing problems, front is delaminating and they are telling her $4K to repair. This is the sorriest excuse I have seen for a camp trailer. I wonder if anyone has considered a lawsuit against the maker?

Re: Quicksilver motorcycle/ATV camperJoe (Chiefonelung)This is my second camping season with the quicksilver 2.0. I really love it. I had a few problems with it in the beginning, but they were caused by the dealership(Boat&RV Rockwood Tn.) They were real jerks to deal with. I went thru Livin-Lite and dealt with a great guy there named Mike that resolved all my problems and never even charged me.I hope he got his money out of the dealership. I pull my 2.0 with a 2011 Ford Transit Connect 4cyl van. It doesn't affect my millage at all. Its quick to set up and easy to maneuver around at the campgrounds.I really love this little camper.

Re: Forest River Cedar Creek fifth wheel JudyWe purchased a 2008 model Cedar Creek fifth wheel in May of 2007. We have had very few problems with the unit except for the vinyl smell transferring into everything in the unit, especially the food. Cereal, rice, pasta, peanut butter, potatoes etc all absorb the vinyl taste over a short periods of time. After voicing our complaint to the technical department at Forest River we were offered the following explanation; The plastic or non-slip shelving we used years ago(even though removed 3 years ago) has caused this lingering odor. What? We know many people who have used and still use the no slip rubber shelving and their food taste fine. We believe that Cedar Creek should come up with a solution to this problem I was told that we are not the first to experience this. What now?

Re: Jayco Jay Flight Bungalow destination trailerTomI bought a Jayco Bungalow 2 years ago. Maybe I got a lemon.. but its crap. None of the slides fit right and the service guy couldn't fix them. Shower doors leaked like a sieve they siliconed them then the bottom broke out of the garden tub. Windows doors ceiling walls all sweat real bad even with a dehumidifier black mould growing in trailer. Jayco's approved repair was to drill two or three holes in through the window frames on all windows, looks like crap. Roof/ceiling dropped around A/C unit. Apparently two roof trusses were broke, the unit has been parked since we got it how did that happen? After being "fixed" by the dealer looks worse than before, by the water stains on the stove and counter I'd say it now leaks. I would not recommend a Jayco product and don't know how to go about getting satisfaction from dealer or Jayco. I've got a 22 month old $50'000 trailer that will have no resale value, due to poor quality workmanship by Jayco and on part by the servicing dealer. We run a campground and have never talked to anyone who has had the issues we've had and gotten no satisfaction.

Re: Forest River Surveyor travel trailerCarolina CamperWe bought a 2008 Surveyor and have enjoyed using it for 2 years with only s few minor problems. Storage drawer supports in the closet cabinet weren't properly screwed in and some of them cracked, so I had to replace them. The fill level indicators for the black water tank seemed prone to gum up and not read correctly but was fixed by getting one of those spray wands you can insert through the toilet to wash out the tank after draining it. The most significant problem has been was that the upper rear bunk collapsed under weight of my son and his son. This was an excessive load, but it just didn't seem to have been adequately secured in the first place. I pulled it out, reinforced it, and reinstalled with more screws, etc. and now it seems to be OK, but it's something one ought to check out BEFORE it comes loose, not after. Also, I have learned to stop and unfurl the outside awning on the way home to make sure it gets completely dry top AND bottom before re-rolling, as otherwise it will mildew (can't roll it out in our storage shelter).

Re: Would you buy an RV made in China?Brad AThis is in response to Dan B's comment that China is one of the biggest threats to global security. Why? Because they have a different form of government than we do? They are not at war with anyone. They do stick their nose into the running of just about every government on earth, we do! China goes around the world giving away money and stuff in order to win friends and influence people. They try to secure natural resourse where ever they can for their growing economy. The only threat that they pose is out doing the rest of the manufacturing world and that is just good biz. I don't really understand why Americans label everyone who uses a different form of government than democracy an enemy! BTW, I'm American born and raised....

Re: Forest River Rockwood ultra lite travel trailerBob WilsonI had about 1200 miles on a new 2010 Ultra Lite 8319S when it blew its first Carlisle tire. It tore the fender well a bit but I replaced the tire with the only one of the same size in Branson, MO. I didn't apply for warranty coverage because there was no Carlisle dealer there. Yes, I had checked the air pressure and they were all at 50psi as stated on the tire sidewall. Then 100 miles later it blew a tire on the other side and messed up the wheel well severely. I bought another tire, again there was no Carlisle tire dealer so an off-brand had to do. You won't believe the next part.... not 20 miles down the road a third blowout occurred! It tore the fender trim completely off and nearly had us in the ditch. I never travel over 55mph, thank God. On investigating I see that the maximum weight the tire is designed to carry is 2100 pounds at 50psi. Times 4 tires they can supposedly carry 8400 pounds MAXIMUM. The damn trailer weighs 8000 pounds bone-stock off the showroom floor. Who the hell would outfit a unit with only 400 pounds of cargo capacity before the tires are considered overloaded? Hell, my wife takes that much weight along in SHOES !!! Carlisle is NO help saying the blowouts are obviously because the Rockwood people chose the wrong tires for installation. Rockwood says it's a Carlisle problem. I'm fed up with the run-around. Otherwise we like the trailer, it pulls wobbly and I put a second anti-sway on the driver's side of the hitch. It helped a little. My bitch is that this is an obvious safety issue that will someday kill a family and no one cares!!! Gonna go out-of-pocket and buy a set of 10 ply 85 psi tires, it'll cost me $650 but at least we will be safe. But who'll fix all the wheel-well damage? I would NEVER buy another Rockwood!! Way too much money and way not enough 'give a damn.' rg.wilson@cox.net
