INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Pesticides

Summary:  Most US households are believed to have some pesticide contamination.  Even homes that do not use pesticides are found to have contamination; a reason is thought to be tracking in contaminated soil or dust from outside.

pesticides

Effects on health (US Environmental Agency):  Irritation to eye, nose, and throat; damage to central nervous system and kidney; increased risk of cancer.  Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, muscular weakness, and nausea. Chronic exposure to some pesticides can result in damage to the liver, kidneys, endocrine and nervous systems.

The following quotes from the US Environmental Agency:

"Products used most often are insecticides and disinfectants. Another study suggests that 80 percent of most people's exposure to pesticides occurs indoors and that measurable levels of up to a dozen pesticides have been found in the air inside homes. The amount of pesticides found in homes appears to be greater than can be explained by recent pesticide use in those households; other possible sources include contaminated soil or dust that floats or is tracked in from outside, stored pesticide containers, and household surfaces that collect and then release the pesticides. Pesticides used in and around the home include products to control insects (insecticides), termites (termiticides), rodents (rodenticides), fungi (fungicides), and microbes (disinfectants). They are sold as sprays, liquids, sticks, powders, crystals, balls, and foggers."

Adding to the story ... Readers comments:

Ken :  The labels on pesticides containers are not adequate. If we have to use a pesticide indoors I think the label should say how often it can be used for example "use no more than once per week". Also we tend to read the labels more for outdoor products. Warnings on labels should be bigger and written in language we can easily understand.

George M :  I've been to the show 3 times. Last year there was an even bigger tent with bigger crowds. A lot can depend on the weather. Usually it's good but I remember one year it was really cold and windy. It's an amazing experience. As you come along the I10 all of a sudden you see thousands of RVs in the desert. The show itself is OK, it's not like the Florida SuperShow with thousands of new RVs to see but the many booths inside the tent are interesting and the atmosphere is almost unique.

Jan H. :  A must see..at least once. If you think the RV industry is not booming just take a gander across this desolate area when the RVs are in bloom. What a site. There is everything there you could want and if you are a brave soul and dry camp there are people who will come to your camp to do installations or repairs, etc. Fun place...bring your Quads and Rhinos, too.

MBintz :  We are here right now! Cold-27 degrees last night, but sunny days. Lots of friends here also. Thats a big part of the show for us.

Jim :  Most of the vendors I spoke with said the show traffic was way down and some said sales were down 40%. Food vendors same. Outside event vendors same. This is NOT the largest RV show, but it is interesting.

camile :  It's shocking what damages pesticides can do by just being exposed to one.
