Strong Consumer Attendance At RV Shows Another Good Sign For Economy
Source - RVIA - January 25, 2010

A spike in attendance at RV shows around the country could be yet another indicator that the RV industry – and America’s economy – are headed for growth in 2010.

Over 50,000 consumers attended the Florida RV Super Show in Tampa this month, up 12 percent over last year’s strong attendance. Attendance at the Grand Rapids (MI) RV Show doubled over last year’s number with more than 20,000 consumers attending. And at the Ohio RV Super Show, 33 percent more consumers showed up this year than last year. The large crowds at these shows have pleasantly surprised organizers and dealers, who say that, in addition to stronger attendance, sales are also much improved over last year.

“Sales were awesome – just like the old days,” said Bob Sanders, sales manager for Dusty’s RV, about the highly successful Florida show. “We wrote 170 deals at the show, compared with 58 last year.” Sanders added that sales were across the board and included 40 motorhomes.

“We are seeing a two year pent up demand for RVs finally opening up,” said FRVTA Executive Director Lance Wilson. “Americans will only wait so long for things that they really want, and it appears they want RVs right now.”

Loren Baidas of General RV Center said consumer enthusiasm and dealer optimism reigned at the Grand Rapids Show. “The attitude of buyers was 100% better than last year,” she said. “People were in a buying mood.”

And at Greensboro (NC) RV Show, Regional Show Manager Anthony Tedesco reported an increase in attendance over last year’s show. “The response from dealers and exhibitors was extremely positive,” said Tedesco. “Show attendees were definitely excited about the RV lifestyle and that really showed. Several RV dealers reported significant growth in sales and felt very positive about the upcoming year due to this event.”

Show manager Dianne Seymour said of the Colorado RV Adventure Travel Show in Denver, “Attendees were lining up at the doors each morning, and we had quite a crowd that stayed until the show’s end every night. People were clearly excited about the RV lifestyle and eager to see what the dealers and exhibitors were offering.” Jim Humble of Windish RV agreed, adding, “It was a fantastic show. This year, we sold double the units we sold last year. This was a quality crowd that was here to buy. We are just thrilled.”

Reports from RV retail shows indicate that shoppers are impressed with new RV products that are smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient than previous models.

“Although consumer interest in RVing remained strong even through tough times, it’s great to see that consumers are now confident enough to begin buying again,” said RVIA President Richard Coon. “Solid traffic at RV shows is another strong sign for 2010.”

RV Upturn Precedes Consumer Confidence Boost
Source: RV Business article - January 27, 2010

The U.S. consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose to a 16-month high of 55.9 in January from a revised 53.6 in December, the Conference Board announced Tuesday (Jan. 26).

A Bloomberg News economists’ survey had expected the index to rise to 53.5 in January, according to Daily Finance. The index was at 50.6 in November, and hit a record low of 25.3 in February 2009. (Base year, 1985=100.)

But the boost should not have come as a surprise, as the bellwether RV industry has been predicting this upturn for weeks.

Traffic and sales at the early retail shows so far this year have been strong, according to industry sources. And earlier this week, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) reported that wholesale shipments to retailers in December rose 150% in a year-over-year comparison.

JimThere won't be anywhere near a full recovery in 2010. People are just expressing wishful thinking. All you have to do is look at the unemployment numbers. Way too many people out of work for way too long of a time. Maybe 2012 if the Mayan prophecy doesn't occur.
HowieThanks nice article and video. I'm putting the doom and gloom aside and jumping in. Going to sell my A and buy a new class B.
RV Mech TechVery nice video and we need more like this one- one comment that's true is "our customers are still there" - people are still going to the RV shows, still purchasing RV's, and many are renting as well- this is a good indication that the RV industry has not lost it's customer support and 2010 will be a better year - another good point in the video is that people are not going to give up their leisure time with their family's and friends and I as an RV technician look forward to helping people make their vacation dreams come true. Thank you!
GloriaI agree it's time to put aside the doom and gloom. We've been putting off buying an RV but if not now, when? If we can get credit we're going to do it. We're wannabees.
polishprince99Had to get rid of my motor home in the winter of 08 for economic reasons. After 12 years and the convenience I'm in remorse. Maybe again someday. Then again maybe I'll find someone that wants one driven for advertising or something. Yea, right.
Clarke II think the worst is over but not enough for me to commit to the class B I'd like. Maybe in 6 months.
John ARV sales are a leading indicator. I think that they should go up even more than forecast. Many people have just been putting off buying an RV until they felt more secure, and some are starting to feel the worst is over.
Pete MullerI've been to 2 rv shows in the last month and both were real busy. This is a buyers market and there's some good deals. Now if I could only sell my present RV.
rt76I think totally green is the way forward and I wish RV manufacturers would start to think that way. Where are the hybrid RVs and environmentally friendly materials?
Wayne I think that in the long term RV sales will go up and up. People like to travel and RVing is cheaper overall.
Joe TIt would be nice to see the RV industry be able to be creative like the auto folks and give RV buyers low interest loans and rates to increase the purchasing of RV's. But it is a buyers market now and there are some good deals.
