 NEW YORK STATE PARK
CAMPING RESERVATIONS UP

"With gasoline prices soaring, state parks are an attractive and inexpensive option"

New York State park camping reservations are up a remarkable 16 percent over last year, according to Carol Ash, Commissioner of the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

"The secret is out: You don't have to travel far to take a great vacation," said Ash. "With gasoline prices soaring, state parks are an attractive and inexpensive option for people looking to get away – without driving too far away. But campgrounds may fill up fast. Whether you're planning to return to a favorite campground or discover a new locale, don't wait to reserve your site any longer."

Many campers are already planning to take advantage of the diverse offerings at state parks. As of early April, 52,186 reservations were booked at OPRHP camping facilities, up from 45,034 at the same time last year – a nearly 16 percent increase. State parks recorded a total of 186,021 advance and walk-up camping reservations in 2007.

The State Office of Parks oversees 67 campgrounds with more than 8,000 campsites, 800 cabins and 50 full service cottages. Camping reservations are available through ReserveAmerica (see link below.)  (The office also oversees 178 state parks and 35 historic sites.)

BM :   Gas prices ARE rediculous ..... so are the prices some charge for campgrounds. Most of us only want a clean, quiet place to stay with friendly people, which most are. I think the RV industry and RV dealers will be forced to reduce their prices. Maybe the dealers will be FORCED to spend a little more time to make repairs and DO THEM RIGHT the first time so you don't have to keep driving back and forth(long distance for some of us)to get them fixed. Most of the time the biggest part of the lst l8 mos. is spent at the dealership when you finally make that BIG(whatever size)purchase. Something NEEDS to wake them up!!!!

Rip :   RVs, mostly big motorhomes are streaming by at speeds of 70+ and flashing their lights to pass. As a trucker with over a million miles I can tell you there is a fuel savings if you back off the pedal. Those with more money than good sense, go ahead but don't expect me to speed up for you.

DanaMite :   Drive less, stay longer, close to California... for free. Total Escape web site list thousands of back roads camping destinations, primitive sites, small campgrounds, lakes, hot springs, forests & parks. For the last 12 years, I've been compiling a huge list of data specific to enjoying outdoors in California.

Keely P :   Gas prices do have a big effect. We'll definitely restrict our miles and stay longer in each place. We're fulltimers and currently we're in New Mexico but due to move on. What we've noticed is that campgrounds have been more full this year than previous winters.
