Is 'boondocking' in Wal-Mart (etc) parking lots good for RVers and the RV industry?

This poll was prompted by a Roaming Times' reader (Patrick Saylor) who wrote the following to us:
"We visited the local Wal-Mart recently and counted 8 RVs camping out in the lot. The majority of them were large, Class A motorhomes. Personally, it makes me angry to see this because there are at least three campgrounds in the area where people could stay overnight. If I were a campground owner I would be livid.  As a representative of the travel and tourism industry  I find this especially troublesome. In my view, having nice, attractive facilities for RVers adds to the attractiveness and marketability of the area as a whole. As an RVer, I find it problematic for the same reasons. I want to have nice options when I travel, but I understand that we need to support campground operators if they are to continue to exist."

This poll has been open - and active - since January 2001.  Up to 9/27/2003 7,828 people have taken the poll.

POLL RESULTS TO DATE
by David Mottram

First of all, it should be said - as many people on the Roaming Times' forum have said - that staying overnight in a Wal-Mart parking lot or a truckstop etc.  is not really boondocking.  We all understand the idea however and this poll has been extremely popular on an ongoing basis.

Almost 8,000 people have now taken the poll; of these, 97% are RVers.  Of these, 64% have actually 'boondocked'.  The people who have and do boondock average about 12% of their RVing doing this.

Almost everyone (96%) agrees that "having nice, attractive facilities for RVers adds to the attractiveness" of an area.  86% also believe they should support RV Park owners - "if they are to continue to exist".

RVers are split about 50/50 on whether the policy of Wal-Mart (and others) in allowing boondocking on their lots is good or bad for RVers.  It's also, interestingly enough, about 50/50 on whether "if you can afford to travel in a large Class A motorhome you should not be using parking lots and truck stops" and boondocking is "a blight on the landscape".

Most people (about 80%) think boondocking is useful when you need to stop and have no idea where to stay.  Given a choice of an "RV camp at very reasonable cost, or a free spot at Wal-Mart", almost 90% would choose the RV park.

Thanks to all of you who've taken this continuingly popular poll - we'll leave the poll open and update the results about once per year.
