The results of the poll show
that while not everyone sees early retirement as an
attractive option, most people - given adequate
financial security - find the attractions available
irresistible. RVing, for example, is fun.
Travel and freedom are attractive but include the
option of sleeping in your own bed and it becomes
nothing short of a wondrous lifestyle. Even
people with less than perfect financial security
find it possible to live fulltime in their RV
traveling and working part-time as they travel.
They say in their replies to the poll that they love
the people they meet and the stimulus of work.
Roaming Times had done a
somewhat similar poll in 2002, but this time –
just three years later - there were some remarkable
differences in peoples’ attitudes.
The poll in 2002 showed 41% had
a “burning ambition” to full-time; only 9% said
they "never" wanted to full-time.
In 2005, less people expressed a strong
desire to full-time.
Instead, more people said they would like to
RV more after retiring, to see the country, but
return to a home base.
And many more expressed the need to work
part-time during their retirement.
The poll did not ask directly if people wanted - or
would find it necessary - to work during
retirement. It did however ask "What do
you think would be your ideal lifestyle for
retirement", and 33% mentioned work in their
reply. Almost all of these talked about
working part-time as they traveled - mainly to
increase income but a small percentage (3%) said
they would like to do voluntary work.
The following are the results of the poll:
Would you like to fulltime RV when you retire?
Yes 67%, No 33%. Many of the "yes"
answers however, were qualified, as mentioned above,
by adding that they would like a home-base to return
to, and/or only wished to full-time for a fixed
number of months per year.
If money was not a consideration would you
like to retire early? Yes 89%, No 11%
Do you think RVing fulltime would be cheaper
than maintaining a home? Yes 48%, No 42%
Other questions that were asked in the poll were:
How do you view retirement - is it something you
want to do? - or is it something you dread?
What do you think would be your ideal lifestyle for
retirement?
What are the things about RVing that you like the
most and the least?
Any other comments.
