Generally speaking, people think campground ratings (eg
Trailer Life) are important; they influence their decision to
go to an RV park. More people think they are accurate
than not, but overwhelmingly they are suspicious of the
process that creates them!
These results compliment the results of the Roaming
Times' 2001 poll that found that while they would prefer
to stay at a campground that was rated, they often wished they
could rewrite the ratings!!
These are the results of this 2003 poll:
We asked "How much influence do
ratings (eg Trailer Life) have on your decision to go to an
RV Park?". Around 37% of the people carrying out
the poll thought ratings were VERY important and only 9%
thought they were not important.
We then asked "Generally speaking, do you think campground ratings (eg
Trailer Life) are accurate?". The results were
similar, 34% thought they were accurate and only 10% thought
they were not.
We then commented that in the Roaming Times forum it has
been suggested that the people campowners pay to place an ad
should not be responsible for producing the ratings. We
asked "Do you agree?". No less than 84% of
people agreed with this - ratings should be more independent!!
The poll then asked about campgrounds own survey
forms. We asked "If a survey form is available to
hand in when you are leaving, would you normally bother to
fill this out?"
88% said they would, only 12% said they would not.
"How important is it to be able to give your opinions?"
53% felt it was VERY important, only 2% felt it was not
important.
"If you do give your opinions, are you generally
honest?" 98% said "Yes". Wow!
We then asked about reservations and check-in:
"Many camps say "no reservations". How
important is it for the camper to be able to book in advance?"
55% felt it was VERY important and 14% felt it was not
important.
"Most camps can not afford to have 24 hour check-in.
How important is it that you should be able to check in
anytime - including after normal office hours?".
57% felt it was VERY important and 19% felt it was not
important.
The following table shows the ratings and standard
deviations for the points considered:
