EGG SMELLS IN THE WATER SYSTEM
by John P

The egg smell that you can get in your RV water system is hydrogen sulfide.

This usually comes from the water itself. What usually happens is that when the water passes through the water heater the dissolved gases in the water are released.  You only need a very small amount of hydrogen sulfide in the water to be released and you get the unpleasant egg smell.

The problem is usually in your water heater. There is probably a build-up of sediment in the system and this leads to the smell. What you need to do is clean the water system.

The best way is to turn off the heater and let the system cool. Then drain and flush the tank. Now you need to somehow make sure you flush as much sediment out as you can. Another thing that helps is to fill the tank with a vinegar solution and let it stand for a few hours then drain and flush again.

If you want to really clean it all out you can next add a weak bleach solution (4 oz for a 10 gallon tank is OK) and then leave it for a few hours and flush again. Driving around and letting the mixture slosh around in the tank helps. And then flush and flush until you get rid of any smells and that's it. Do this as often as you need to get rid of smells and keep your system working efficiently.
