BAD
SMELLS IN THE RV
AFTER STORAGE
by Steve
Dunn
We
store our RV
for weeks at a
time in
between use. A
problem we had
was bad sewer
smells after
it had been
sat for a few
weeks, even
though I had
emptied the
tanks before
leaving.
I
tried filling
the toilet
bowl with
water and
found that
when I left it
for a few
hours it was
gradually
draining out.
I think this
obviously
means the seal
was not
sealing
properly. So I
put a light
coating of
vaseline on
the seal and
tested it
again. This
time it didn't
leak out.
Since then we
haven't had
any smells
after we store
the RV.
Another
thing I've
started to do
is to flush
the tanks out
more
carefully. I
think there
are also a lot
of smells that
come from the
gray tank.
Before leaving
the RV in
storage, I
empty the gray
tank and then
mix a cup of
baking soda
and a gallon
of water and
pour this into
the tank
pouring some
into each
drain. I then
flush this out
and have found
that this
cures the gray
tank smells I
used to have.
Another
thing I've
found is that
chemical
additives are
not necessary.
I think the
one's with
formaldehyde
are not only
bad for the
environment
they also add
to the smell.
I believe that
the best way
to deal with
tanks is to
consider them
holding tanks
only and to
empty them and
flush them as
often as
possible.
