AN
EXPLOSIVE
SITUATION
by Dick Cain
While
traveling on
Interstate
Highways at
normal
Interstate
speeds, I
stopped at a
restaurant to
get a bite to
eat and when
we came out of
the eating
spot I noticed
something
about my rig
that did not
look right. I
approached it
and realized
that I was
looking at one
end of my
horizontal LP
gas tank
hanging to
within 4
inches of the
ground! \
Raising
the access
door and
assessing the
situation
revealed that
two of the
supporting
brackets were
totally broken
loose and the
other two (the
rear ones)
were about
half-broken
through! I
trembled at
the thought of
what would
have happened
if the tank
had dropped
down onto the
highway at 50
mph with cars
all around
(the traffic
had been quite
heavy) and the
two rear tires
on the right
side had ran
over it!
I
finally
resorted to
removing the
LP tank and
putting it
inside the
motorhome (no
other choice)
so we could
continue to
our
destination as
we were on a
fairly tight
schedule for a
reunion in New
London, CT.
While
in CT, I got a
mobile
repairman to
come out and
reattach it
properly. The
manufacturer
(Tiffin) had
done a
pathetic job
of welding the
brackets on at
the factory
and I was
lucky they had
lasted as long
as they had. I
took photos
and sent them
to the
manufacturer
who was not
the least
interested,
and didn't
even give me
the courtesy
of a reply.
Another
case of poor
quality
control in a
very dangerous
area of a
potentially
catastrophic
happening.
