ADVICE
FOR A WOMAN
TRAVELING
ALONE
BY Bohemian

Bohemian
Spirit:
"Do
you think a
fairly healthy
58 year old
single woman
could RV alone
across the
USA? Your
thoughts
please..."
Marie
Palmer:
"Absolutely.
I've been
traveling
alone (with my
border collie)
for more than
3 years. I'm
now 62 and
have some back
problems. I
have an 8
years old
Bounder with a
ford pickup
toad. I
workcamp for a
few months as
I go. I find
making friends
very easy -
RVers are
mainly very
friendly.
They're also
very helpful
and when I get
into
difficulties
with almost
anything they
always seem
very ready to
help. I have a
small pension
and I work out
my budget very
carefully but
basically it
takes much
less money
than a house
and all the
extras.
Workcamping
pays all my
bills."
Laura T:
"A
woman can
travel alone
by car or RV
if she uses a
lot of common
sense and
takes some
precautions.
The joy of
exploration
and
uncompromised
decisions are
very special.
The price for
that is
vulnerability,
but that can
be minimized.
I traveled
with two well
trained dogs,
a fully
charged cell
phone, a
laptop and
maps, a full
tank of gas,
flash lights
that worked
and my road
side
assistance
phone number
in a handy
place. I was a
woman alone
for a very
long time and
I found I
could get help
from people
very readily
when I needed
it. But this
is what I
learned when I
wanted some
help from a
neighbor male
camper - be
sure to ask
his wife
before you ask
him. She may
be friendly
and secure -
but maybe not
- be
forewarned.
Campers are by
and large
friendly to
each other -
but a single
woman is a
threat to
married women
- be it at a
dinner party
or a campsite.
Depending on
what your
goals are,
rving alone
can be an
adventure you
will never
forget or
regret and
there really
is no reason
not to do it
just because
you're alone."
